Operator is capable of navigating the web, interacting with websites, and performing tasks as if operated by a human.

OpenAI, the developer behind ChatGPT, has launched Operator, a groundbreaking AI agent designed to take control of computers and execute tasks independently. This long-anticipated release represents a major milestone in OpenAI’s efforts to reshape daily life through artificial intelligence.
During a live-streamed event on Thursday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman introduced Operator as an AI system capable of performing actions such as searching the internet, moving a cursor, clicking on links, and more. Built on the advanced GPT-4o model, Operator is categorized as a computer-using agent (CUA).
To illustrate its everyday practicality, Altman and the OpenAI team demonstrated Operator’s capabilities by uploading a shopping list image. Operator processed the list, searched Instacart for the items, added them to a virtual cart, confirmed the pricing, and asked whether to place the order. Other examples included searching for NBA tickets on StubHub and ordering food via DoorDash.
Operator also comes with a “Take control” option, allowing users to step in when needed, such as to input payment details or resolve Captchas. Additionally, it supports customization, enabling users to set preferences like choosing specific airlines for flights or selecting favorite product brands.
OpenAI has partnered with several major companies, including Instacart, DoorDash, StubHub, OpenTable, Priceline, Thumbtack, Target, Etsy, Associated Press, Reuters, and Uber, to ensure Operator works smoothly on their platforms.
Operator is currently available to U.S. users subscribed to the $200-per-month ChatGPT Pro plan. Altman assured that the technology will soon become “more accessible, affordable, and widely available.” Additionally, Operator’s integration into OpenAI’s API is expected within the coming weeks.
This launch follows another significant announcement from OpenAI earlier in the week. On Tuesday, Altman appeared alongside President Donald Trump to announce Stargate, a $500 billion project aimed at creating a robust data center infrastructure. The initiative, referred to as the “AI Manhattan Project,” marks a substantial investment in the future of artificial intelligence.
